BoxingScene.com recently spoke to former champion Stevie Forbes who will face Jesse Vargas on May 5th on the Floyd Mayweather-Miguel Cotto undercard. Vargas was originally slated to face Alfonso Gomez who pulled out of the fight after suffering back spasms. Forbes is taking the fight on less than 2 weeks notice.
Forbes is in good shape as he has been sparring with Canelo Alvarez who will also be on the Mayweather-Cotto undercard against Shane Mosley. Forbes had a lot of good things to say about Alvarez.
"He looks good. He's a lot more technical than people give him credit for. When me and him are boxing its more speed boxing. We are working on his speed. Speed and combinations. He looks good. He's in really good condition. I am probably more excited for this fight than the other fights on the card. I think its going to be fireworks," Forbes told BoxingScene.
While Alvarez has been criticized by some for his level of competition the Mexican fighter is known for being a very accurate puncher. I mentioned to Forbes that Alvarez puts combinations together that are rarely seen from a 21-year old fighter.
"You are right. Canelo can throw 5, 6 or 7 punch combinations. He has very good hand speed and very good boxing smarts. I was very impressed while sparring with him with how smart he is. He is really mature for his age," The former Contender series participant said in agreement.
Forbes finished our conversation by saying that he is curious to see how Mosley handles Alvarez's power and vice versa.
"He has really good power. His power is explosive with pretty much both hands. I'm anxious to see when he hits Shane clean and when Shane hits him clean how they react."
