WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) sat down with a group of reporters in Puerto Rico and explained his selection of Miguel Cotto as the opponent for May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mayweather was attempting to secure both Manny Pacquiao and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, but Mayweather's financial terms were not accepted by either fighter.
Mayweather is moving up to 154-pounds for the second time in his career, to challenge Cotto for the WBA's junior middleweight championship.
"[Cotto] is a solid and strong champion. He has been at the top for a long time. [Cotto] is a solid middleweight who knows the sport of boxing. I also know boxing and always try to face the best, and he is one of the best in the sport. I tried to get the fight against Pacquiao. He was offered a large sum and it didn't happen, so you have to move on. We always want to fight against the best opposition, so we chose Miguel Cotto. I look forward to [facing] the best Miguel Cotto because they will have the best Floyd Mayweather," Mayweather said.
