At the Andre Ward-Chad Dawson weigh-in, middleweight prospect Fernando Guerrero revealed he is now training with Virgil Hunter in the Bay Area.
“Virg and I had an agreement to move out here in Oakland,” Guerrero (24-1, 18 KOs) told BoxingScene.com. “It’s more of a style I’m comfortable with, so we’re going to make it happen.”
Guerrero had been training with rising cornerman Ricky Funez at the Ten Goose Gym in Van Nuys, Calif. The two enjoyed a successful partnership, going a perfect 2-0 with one stoppage during that period.
“It was great working with Ricky,” Guerrero said. “He helped me a lot, and when I made this decision, we talked about what we need to do to grow. We’re still friends and still staying in contact.”
Funez, who was also in attendance, agreed with his former charge.
“We had a good two fights together, and I wish him the best,” Funez said. “We’re still going to be friends.”
Guerrero also said he plans to return in October according to a conversation he had with his adviser Al Haymon.
