Hall of Famer and former world champion Jeff Fenech is worried that eight division beltholder Manny Pacquiao will get seriously hurt if he continues to fight.
Fenech, who also trains fighters, was ringside this past weekend when Pacquiao suffered a shocking twelve round decision loss at the hands of huge underdog Jeff Horn at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia.
In the weeks leading up to the fight, Fenech had predicted that his countryman Horn was going to pull off a huge upset.
While there are a lot of observers who felt Pacquiao was robbed of a win, most of them agree that the 38-year-old fighter had lost a few steps and was starting to look his age in the ring. The non-stop combinations, the incredible stamina, and the awkward angles were key factors that were largely missing from Pacquiao's arsenal in the bout.
There is an immediate rematch clause, which Pacquiao may exercise.
“We have a clause for a rematch. No problem,” Pacquiao said in the ring after the judges’ decision.
Pacquiao's Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, would rather have his boxer retire - but he's willing to allow a rematch with Horn to take place - and then he wants his most famous student to end his glittering 22-year professional career.
But Fenech believes Pacquiao, who retired briefly last year, should hang up his gloves for good this time. He does not agree with the idea of doing a rematch with Horn and says Pacquiao should walk away and strictly focus on his blossoming political career in the Philippines.
"If they let Manny fight again, that´s stupid," Fenech said.
"He should go relax and enjoy the money he has made. He´s got nothing to prove. Retire. Jeff fought the right fight and took Manny to places he´d not been before ... he made it a bit dirty."
