On December 11th blue chip prospect Felix "Diamante" Verdejo (18-0) will test out his surgically repaired hand for the first time since his June unanimous decision victory over Ivan Najera. Verdejo will face Josenilson Dos Santos (27-3) in the main event that will be aired on truTV.
The 22-year-old was originally slated to return on October 31st but that was pushed back when Verdejo had a set back in camp. He has since declared himself injury free and is excited to fight again in his native Puerto Rico
"Everything is good with my hand. Thanks to God we are going forward and will be ready to go on December 11th. I am happy that I can finally fight again. I am pain free and ready to go. I can't wait to perform at home," Verdejo told BoxingScene.com.
Since an impressive showing in the 2012 Olympics, Verdejo has been anointed the heir apparent to Miguel Cotto as the next big star out of Puerto Rico. With Cotto recently stating that retirement is likely in the next 12 months, the future may come very soon for the young Boricua.
He said that all of the talk has motivated him and he takes pride in accomplishing his goals.
"I am very motivated to be the best. I am working hard and motivated to achieve my dreams. We are working hard to get a title shot. I am just going to keep working hard and get closer to my goal. I know it will come sooner than later," said Verdejo.
Verdejo-Dos Santos will be televised live on truTV on Friday, December 18th. Nonito Donaire takes on Cesar Juarez for the vacant WBO super bantamweight title in the televised co-featured bout.
