Escobedo vs. Cherry 5/12 in Woodland, Pending Medicals
By Ryan Maquiñana
Sources have advised BoxingScene.com that pending medical approval, Edner Cherry is slated to make an immediate return on May 12 to face junior lightweight contender Vicente Escobedo in the main event for TeleFutura’s Solo Boxeo in Woodland, Calif.
Cherry (30-6-1, 16 KOs), from Wauchula, Fla., via Nassau, Bahamas, escaped with a majority decision over Juan Carlos Martinez in last Saturday’s Solo Boxeo headiner. He is meeting with a doctor today to be examined.
Meanwhile, Escobedo (25-3, 15 KOs) will come back to his hometown for the second straight time. In March, the longtime lightweight turned 130-pounder decked Lonnie Smith three times in the first round en route to an emphatic stoppage win, also on Solo Boxeo.
The bout, for a regional title, took place in front of a packed house at the Woodland Community Center, the same site for the May 12 affair.
Originally, Escobedo had been tabbed as the prime candidate to fight WBO junior lightweight titlist Adrien Broner. However, multiple sources have informed BoxingScene that Golden Boy has instead projected that matchup to occur in the late summer or early fall.
In other news pertaining to May 12, junior featherweight Manuel “Tino” Avila (7-0, 2 KOs), who was scheduled to fight in the co-feature, has reportedly injured his back in a car accident and is now off the card.

sounds like a good bout but it's not based on what Cherry didn't do last wk on Telefutura...slow & plodding w/no combos...walking straight in w/no head /body movement..I though Cherry was going 2 show someting dropping 2 JrLt but hasn't...Escobedo…Comment by .:: JSFD26 ::. on 04-17-2012

Escobedo-Cherry should be a solid fight. Cherry hasn't lost since fighting Bradley and has never been taken out not to mention he is a pretty exciting fighter even if he is not a big puncher. I would expect Escobedo to…Comment by Kagami Taiga on 04-17-2012
Man, just fight PDL again. It'd rather have Broner-PDL than Canelo-Mosley
of course. one fight is legit, the other is trashComment by LA_2_Vegas on 04-17-2012
