The undefeated junior middleweight, Cuban boxer Erislandy Lara (15-0, 10KOs), is looking to get a title shot by May. Lara wants to get the winner of the February WBA 154-pound title fight between Rigoberto Alvarez and Austin Trout. Lara wants to battle his way through the ranks until he clears the way for a fight with Manny Pacquiao.
"Everyone who wants to fight Pacquiao is just looking to secure a million dollar purse. Lara's case is different because he has enough to win. When the time comes, Lara will aim to dethrone Pacquiao and become the new king of boxing, in the same way that Pacquiao did when he knocked out Oscar de la Hoya in 2008. But this is all part of a process,'' said Lara's manager Luis De Cubas Jr. to Luis Sanchez.
Before a Pacquiao fight is even close to being a consideration, Lara will try to get the winner of Rigoberto Alvarez and Austin Trout, who battle for the WBA's "regular" title. After that, he wants to fight the main players at 154.
"We have to see how they look. After this fight, the clash against Lara is set within 120 days. If Lara wins the world title and then defeats Cotto, Margarito and Martínez, for example, he would earn the right to fight against Pacquiao. It would be a great fight," said De Cubas.
