WBA interim-junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KOs) believes a fight with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-1-1, 30KOs) will happen at some point in the future.

Canelo is facing countryman Alfredo Angulo on March 8th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Lara does not have a scheduled return, but there have been rumors of former champion Ishe Smith as being a possible opponent.

In Friday article on BoxingScene.com, Canelo said his "full focus" was on Angulo, but he also said he sees Lara as an opponent "in the future."

"I agree he should focus on the fight he has in front of him. It should be a great fight and I'm ready to fight either guy next," Lara said.

"There is a lot of public demand to see that fight. Many people feel he would beat me but there's only one way to find that out. Champions fight the best so if he wants to be the best he will have to take on the one who everyone recognizes as the best at 154 pounds, which is me."

"The fans deserve to see the best fights and Golden Boy puts on the best fights so it will happen sooner or later. I will keep doing my job, which is winning, and fight the best who are willing to step in the ring."

If you were Canelo, Mayweather, or even Quinlin, would you risk your titles, p4p status, and rep against a pure boxer while you can fight plodders, sluggers, & non defensive, but exciting fi...

What a shame , seems Lara wants to fight anybody but nobody wants it
I don't doubt Canelo wants the fight.... doesn't mean it'll happen though.
One thing I can say is that it will be a very difficult style match up for Ginger because he is a not a pressure fighter who can cut off the ring and brawl well on the inside. He is a natural count...

The winner of the fight between Angulo vs Canelo will never face the winner of the fight between Cotto and Martinez because of the rival promotional companies of Top Rank and Golden Boy. The more realistic scenario is to keep the fighters in house with Lara potentially challenging the winner of t...
