Ernest Gabion catches up with undefeated IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz to discuss his upcoming first title defense against veteran Eric Morel.

In the opinion of Eric Morel (46-3, 23 KO's), his great performance against Abner Mares is the main reason that he was able to secure a second title shot in less than a year. Morel vows to do everything in his power defeat Leo Santa Cruz (20-0-1, 11 KO's) for the IBF's bantamweight champion on September 15th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The bout is taking place on the Showtime televised quadrupleheader, which features Saul Alvarez-Josesito Lopez in the main event.

According to sources in Puerto Rico, former two-time champion Eric Morel (46-3, 23 KO's) will have another chance to win a world title when he takes Mexico's Leo Santa Cruz (20-0-1, 11 KOs) for the IBF bantamweight championship on September 15th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight will be televised by Showtime.

The two-time world champion, Eric Morel (46-3 and 23 KO's), is looking to come back strong from the decision loss to Abner Mares on April 21, when they fought for the vacant WBC super bantamweight title. Morel is possibly going to return to action in August, says his father and trainer Cyril. But, the older Moreno indicates that his son will possible face WBA bantamweight champion Anselmo 'Chemito' Moreno of Panama on October 20 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Eric Morel (46-3, 23 KO's), coming off last Saturday's unanimous decision loss to undefeated Abner Mares, who fought for the vacant WBC super bantamweight championship, has been offered a ring return on a date in August. Eric plans to return to 118 pounds, according to his coach and father Cyril.

By Jake Donovan - If Saturday’s performance wasn’t enough to declare Abner Mares already among the best super bantamweights in the world, then he certainly sent a hell of a warning shot. Mares had no problem adapting to life after bantamweight, dominating Eric Morel in their vacant title fight Saturday evening at the Don Haskins Convention Center in El Paso, Texas. Scores were 119-109 (twice) and 120-107 in favor of Mares in their Showtime-televised main event. Whatever game plan Morel had in mind went completely out the window the moment he elected to remain a stationary target. That occurred midway through the first round. The former flyweight titlist was faring well to that point, but stopped moving and was quickly forced into a brawl. Mares – fighting at his heaviest weight in nearly six years – appeared stronger than had been the case in his past several fights. Crisp left hooks to the body had Morel off balance and in trouble in each of the first two rounds as he built an early lead. Morel’s only chance was slowing down the fight to a crawl. The veteran reached deep into his bag of tricks, switching back and forth from conventional to southpaw stance. The tactic produced mixed results, though at the very least minimized punishment.

Warrior Abner Mares landed 56% of his power shots while averaging 65 punches thrown per round. Eric Morel hung tough, landing 20 of 80 punches in last round- his high totals for the fight. Mares closed the show by landing 48 of 110 punches in last round, high total for him as well. ShotStats are provided by CompuBox

El PASO, Texas – Abner Mares has power, he has speed, and now he has a second world championship belt. Mares, the 26-year-old undefeated Mexican American from Hawaiian Gardens, Calif., by way of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, captured the vacant WBC Super Bantamweight World Championship with an emphatic victory over game veteran Eric Morel on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday night at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. By Cliff Rold - After a barn burning run that included a Yonnhy Perez, the Showtime Bantamweight tournament, and a tournament final rematch, Abner Mares gets his breather. Right? Well, it’s what it looks like as he moves into a new division for a catchweight bout with a WBC 122 lb. belt on the line. Across the ring is a man who represented the U.S. at the 1996 Olympics, a teammate of Floyd Mayweather, before emerging as one of the world’s best Flyweights in the early 2000’s. A pair of losses and a stint behind bars for sexual assault appeared to eliminate Eric Morel from the upper echelon of boxing but he’s rebuilt. Morel has won eleven in a row since 2008, including a disputed call against Gerry Penalosa, to earn what is probably his last serious shot. He’s not believed to have a big shot to win and, given his age, looks like the sort of foe who brings a name more than a chance. Is it the case?

Don Haskins Convention Center, El Paso, Texas - In a battle of former champions, Abner Mares (24-0, 13KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over Eric Morel (46-3, 23KOs) to capture the vacant WBC super bantamweight title. Their fight took place at a catch-weight of 120-pounds. The scores were 120-107, and 119-109 twice.
