Media outlets from every corner hailed Dublin's Conor McGregor for a gritty display on Saturday following his tenth round TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The pundits focused on the mixed martial arts star's endurance and bravery in managing to stay upright for 10 rounds with an opponent of Mayweather's calibre, particularly as it was his first professional bout in a boxing ring.

While McGregor wants to fight again in a boxing ring, UFC President Dana White would like to have his lightweight champion remain 100% focused on MMA fights for the remainder of his career.

McGregor started well in the fight and many felt he likely won the first three rounds, but the 40 year old Mayweather - who was coming off a two year retirement - began to up his activity in round four and eventually McGregor's gas tank emptied and he was stopped.

Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, like many others, was surprised with McGregor's abilities in a boxing ring. He was very surprised that McGregor was able to last ten rounds against Mayweather.

According to Ellerbe, McGregor could have a future in the sport - if he decides to go in that direction.

“I was actually very surprised with his ability to do certain things. He definitely has, if he chooses to. He definitely has a future in boxing - if he chooses to. To be able to last as long as he did, he’s a very tough competitor. He has a big heart, and again, he showed a lot, especially with this being his professional debut. I think that he did the UFC proud, he did his country proud, and he should definitely keep his head up high,” Ellerbe said.

“He’s tough as nails. He wasn’t going to lay down. He has a big heart and I understand why he’s the biggest star in the UFC, and one of the biggest stars in all of sports.”
