SANTA MONICA, CALIF. - Fight week kicked-off Wednesday afternoon with media workouts for the long awaited rematch between former world champion "Vicious" Victor Ortiz and Andre "The Beast" Berto that headlines Premier Boxing Champions on FOX and FOX Deportes on Saturday, April 30 from StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.
For two opponents each predicting to knock out the other, Edwin Rodriguez and Thomas Williams Jr. seem to agree on a lot heading into their showdown this weekend.
On April 30th light heavyweight contenders Edwin Rodriguez (28-1) and Thomas Williams Jr. (19-1) will square off at the StubHub Center on Carson. California.
On some occasions fights are made which build up the expectations of fans who await a classic match-up only to be left disappointed at the resulting performance of both combatants. However, when the idea was mooted that Maryland’s Thomas Williams Jr (19-1, 13 KOs) could meet Edwin Rodríguez (28-1, 19 KOs) in the ring, nobody believed that could fall into the category of let downs. Williams himself agreed with that theory when he spoke to BoxingScene.com about the April 30 clash.
CARSON, CALIF. - Former welterweight world champions "Vicious" Victor Ortiz (31-5-2, 24 KOs) and Andre "The Beast" Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) will meet again in a 12-round welterweight rematch in primetime on Saturday, April 30 as Premier Boxing Champions (PBC)
If all goes as planned, promoter Yvon Michel of GYM will stage two big events in the coming months in Montreal. The first event would feature the return of former super middleweight world champion Lucian Bute (32-3, 25 KOs) at the end of April or early May against an opponent who still needs to be undetermined. Then the other would possibly take place on the 4th of June with WBC champion heavyweight Adonis Stevenson (27-1, 22 KOs) as the headliner.
Two days ago, March 12 carried an attractive centerpiece for boxing’s 2016 first quarter. The date now represents a gaping hole in the schedule. On the heels of the postponement of the welterweight title fight between Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter, event handlers have opted to disband the entire show altogether.
What was once rumored as a possibility has now become a reality for Edwin Rodriguez and Thomas Williams Jr., as the pair of light heavyweights will collide on March 12 at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Edwin Rodriguez was ringside to watch heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder defend his WBC title for the third time with a devastating ninth round knockout of Polish challenger Artur Szpilka on Saturday night, live on SHOWTIME in front of 12,668 fans at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
