Jose Ramirez, Andy Ruiz, Jose Benavidez Win Big In Fresno

By Jake Donovan

It says a lot of the prospects of Jose Carlos Ramirez to take center stage with the likes of Andy Ruiz and Jose Benavidez Jr. on the same show. The 21-year old wasn't the least bit fazed by his surroundings, looking every bit like a main event fighter with a two-round drubbing of Jesus Selig on Saturday evening at Selland Arena in Fresno, California.

Ramirez wasted no time in seeking his fourth straight early exit. The super lightweight prospect is quickly gaining a reputation as a knockout artist, adding to his resume after finding the sweet spot early in round two. The body attack was key in setting up crushing blows upstairs. When Selig refused to wilt after getting cracked on the chin, Ramirez went back downstairs.

Digging left hooks to the body quickly broke Selig (16-3-1, 10KO), who found himself stuck in place as Ramirez scored with consecutive rib breakers to force his opponent to the canvas. No count was necessary as the referee immediately halted the contest.

The official time was 0:44 of round two.

Ramirez cruises to 10-0 (8KO). All eight of his career knockouts have come in two rounds or less. His last four contests have amassed a combined total of less than 13 minutes of ring action.

UNDERCARD

Heavyweight hopeful Andy Ruiz remained unbeaten after easily turning away journeyman Manuel Quezada inside of two rounds.

The bout marked Ruiz' stateside appearance in nearly a year, having spent his last two fights overseas in Macau, China. The Mexican heavyweight enjoyed a triumphant return to the U.S., overwhelming Quezada early before battering him into submission.

A flurry of punches had Quezada in retreat in round two. The referee wisely recognized a one-way fight going nowhere fast, and jumped in to rescue the aged veteran.

The official time was 2:00 of round two.

Ruiz improves to 22-0 (16KO) with the win, his first of 2014. The 24-year old has now scored eight straight knockouts.

Quezada falls to 29-9 (18KO). The 36-year old journeyman has now dropped five straight.

Phoenix-based rising prospect Jose Benavidez Jr. cruised to a six-round decision over Midwestern clubfighter Angel Hernandez.

Scores were 60-51 across the board. Benavidez Jr. (20-0, 14KO) scored a knockdown early in the fight and remained in control every step of the way against Indiana's Hernandez (16-16-1, 13KO), who has now dropped five straight as he falls to .500 for the first time in his career.

All bouts aired live on UniMas Solo Boxeo.

Another hapless setup for Benavidez. Whats new. Guess being put on queer street and badly hurt by a club fighter recently has scared his team from putting him in with anything with a heartbeat. Glad that ShowBox does let crap…

This guy has too much skin. Although he gets in shape to fight, his aspect would keep looking terrible. So I don't think he is out of shape, right now. The skinnier Arreola showed less stamina and hear than the…
