Main Events CEO, Kathy Duva, reacting to some recent statements by trainer Abel Sanchez, said it is certainly possible to do a fight between Sergey Kovalev (26-0-1, 23KOs) and Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28KOs) - but only if GGG moves up to 175-pounds to face her boxer. She says a catch-weight will not be entertained as Kovalev already works hard just to make his division limit.
Kovalev became a three belt champion on Saturday night, beating Bernard Hopkins to unify the WBA/WBO/IBF light heavyweight belts. Golovkin is the dangerous force of the middleweight division, with the WBA/IBO/WBC-interim titles around his waist.
Sanchez, who trains GGG, had stated earlier in the week that his boxer is willing to fight anyone in the right scenario - from 154 to 175-pounds. Sanchez did not specify if Golovkin would be willing to move up two full divisions to secure a pay-per-view opportunity at 175 or if a catch-weight is absolutely necessary.
"I don't think, if you look at the size of Sergey Kovalev, that he's fighting at any catch-weight with anybody. If they want to fight him, they will have to come up to his weight class. He's holding three titles in the light heavyweight division. He's a light heavyweight. Having said that, I've been in this business for a long time and you can never say never," Duva told BoxingScene.com.
"Could there be a day where Golovkin wants to challenge himself and move up to 175-pounds...and Sergey is still there. Could it happen? Anything can happen. Two great champions should want to fight each other and we've certainly seen guys move up in weight to test their skills...it's a time honored tradition in our sport."
