Defending WBA 'regular' super bantamweight champion, Scott Quigg, fresh off his two round destruction of Kiko Martinez on July 18th, is currently in Los Angeles, making his annual pilgrimage to all the gyms in Southern California. In his future could be a showdown against the accomplished Nonito Donaire in the fall.
WBA 'regular' super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg is heading to Los Angeles and the famous Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach with his family after handily disposing the challenger Kiko Martinez in the Manchester Arena the same night Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire also battered former European champion Anthony Settoul in two rounds in Macau.
Nonito Donaire would be happy to travel to Manchester to take on WBA super-bantamweight world champion Scott Quigg. Donaire (35-3-KO23) lost his own super-bantamweight world title to Guillermo Rigondeaux in April 2013 but after losing a WBA Super title to Nicholas Walters up at featherweight, he has dropped back down and recorded a second second-round knockout in a row at the weekend – against Anthony Settoul. After Quigg demolished former IBF king Kiko Martinez at the Manchester Arena and current IBF champion Carl Frampton recovered from two first-round knockdowns to beat Alejandro Gonzalez Jr, the chances of a unification fight still look slim, with Donaire seemingly likely to be handed the Quigg fight.
Fresh off his latest venture into Macao, promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank is now looking to finalize a fight card in Dubai, which for so long has been brandied about as a destination for boxing. The veteran promoter told BoxingScene.com on Monday morning - "I got a call today from Dubai and they're coming to the States next week to finalize everything." So could this actually be happening after all these years of press releases that amounted to nothing? Are they actually at the one yard line with the ball ready to be pushed over the goal line?
NONITO “The Filipino Flash” Donaire continued his journey to redemption with a smashing second-round technical knockout of former European bantamweight champion Anthony Settoul, whom he dropped three times en route to a defining victory that is destined to set-up a mouth-watering showdown with World Boxing Association champion Scott Quigg of Britain. The British champion, on the other hand, mauled former world champion Kiko Martinez in similar fashion to win by a second-round TKO. With the win, Donaire’s father and trainer Dodong Donaire is now looking ahead at a possible title fight by his son against Quigg.
Five division world champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire, his spirits lifted after a smashing 2nd round TKO victory over former European bantamweight champion Anthony Settoul last Saturday in Macau, plans to take a one week break before returning to the gym to begin training for a possible WBA title fight against Britain’s Scott Quigg. Donaire, wife Rachel and their two kids left for Las Vegas on Sunday night with Donaire promising he would train really hard for the Quigg fight which is likely to take place in November, most probably at the Manchester Arena in Britain although Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told the New Standard/BoxingScene.com that Dubai is in the running to stage the WBA title fight.
WBA 'regular' super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg stayed on course for a bumper bout with the likes of Carl Frampton, Nonito Donaire and Guillermo Rigondeaux after retaining his WBA super-bantamweight title with a second-round stoppage of Kiko Martinez. Over in America, Frampton was floored twice before taking a points win over Alejandro Gonzalez Jr on the same night, and Hearn will hold fresh talks with the Northern Irishman’s advisers about a major domestic fight.
