On this week's edition of The Boxing Lab, which is BoxingScene.com's weekly radio show, WBO/WBC bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire spoke on a variety of subjects.
One of which was an article that BoxingScene recently published, where IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko called Donaire a coward for not joining the bantamweight tournament that Showtime put together. Agbeko faces Abner Mares on August 13th in the bantamweight finals.
Donaire found Agbeko's comments amusing. "That is kind of funny that he would say that. He lost to a guy (Volodymyr Sidorenko) that I beat and now he is saying that," said Donaire.
Boxingscene's Ernest Gabion mentioned that a showdown against Mares (provided he
beats Agbeko) would be the most lucrative fight that could be made at 118. Gabion asked Donaire that if Agbeko defeats Mares would Donaire look to move up 122 pounds for a more lucrative fight.
"It doesn't matter if it is lucrative or not to me. It doesn't matter because I remember making $400 for a fight and now I am making a lot more compared to when I started," stated Donaire.
Donaire went on to say that if Agbeko comes out of the Mares fight victorious that he would have no problem facing the African fighter.
"He has a tough fight with (Abner) Mares coming up. If he wins that fight then we can do that (fight). You know I don't back down to any challenge."
Donaire also confirmed rumors that he is looking to return to the ring in October.
