On Saturday evening in Corpus Christi, TX, former champion Nonito "Filipino Flash" Donaire will face Vic Darchinyan in a rematch of their 2007 fight that Donaire won with a thrilling one punch knockout. The 30-year-old Donaire said that he went back to basics in his preparation for this fight. "We are training hard. We are trying to go back to who I was, a person who is smart, a person who is fast. The problem with me was the muscle memory wasn't there anymore when I was throwing combinations I wasn't pulling and only the power was coming out," Donaire told BoxingScene.com shortly after Orlando Salido recaptured the WBO featherweight belt with a knockout victory over Orlando Cruz in Las Vegas.

By Jake Donovan - Through a loss, Nonito Donaire’s career has come full circle. The former three-division champion entered 2013 on the heels of his Fighter of the Year campaign, but barely had time to accept his award before suffering his first loss since 2001, in his second pro fight. The points loss to Guillermo Rigondeaux affected Donaire’s previous ranking atop the 122 lb. division, but didn’t even slightly alter his good standing with cable giant HBO. His return was in the works long before the network even considered bringing Rigondeaux back on their airwaves. Donaire can certainly relate to what his conqueror is going through, having experienced the same thing himself some six years ago. Ironically enough, Donaire’s long-ago plight came after the biggest win of his career at the time, which happened to come against the fighter he faces this weekend. A sensational one-punch knockout of then-unbeaten flyweight champ Darchinyan served as a huge breakout moment in Donaire’s career. The Fil-Am boxer was on the rise at the time, but exploded on the boxing scene after scoring what was at the time considered a major upset.

2012 “Fighter of the Year” Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is “good to go” in his rematch with Vic Darchinyan in Corpus Christi, Texas on Sunday morning Manila Time in a fight to be telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN over its pre-eminent Channel 2 as well as globally on The Filipino Channel. Donaire spoke to the Manila Standard as he and wife Rachel were on their way to the airport to pick up Nonito’s dad, Nonito “Dodong” Donaire Sr from the airport. He said training had been “very good and I am mentally focused” for the fight even as he bared no problems in making the featherweight limit and even though he didn’t work out today and ate a full meal he weighed in at 130 pounds that is just 4 pounds over the limit which he should have no problem shedding off before the official weigh-in.

Former three division world champion Vic Darchinyan is seeking to avenge his stunning 5th round knockout by four division champion and 2012 “Fighter of the Year” Nonito “The Filipino Flash” on July 7, 2007 when they face off in a rematch at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas on November 10, Manila Time. 2012 "Fighter of the Year" Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire is revving up for his rematch with Australia's Vic Darchinyan who has been chasing a return bout ever since he was knocked out by Donaire in the 5th round and lost his IBF and IBO flyweight belts on July 7, 2007. Well-known producer of top-class mouthguards Dr. Ed De La Vega reported that Donaire drove from his home in Las Vegas to Oxnard, California to train at the gym of 2012 "Trainer of the Year" Robert Garcia. Accompanying Donaire was his Dad, Nonito "Dodong" Donaire Sr and promising Filipino fighter Marvin Mabait who sparred four rounds with Donaire after the four division champion did six rounds with a tough Mexican kid who trains at Garcia's gym. Dr. De La Vega said Donaire weighed in at 131 pounds as he prepares for his ten-round debut as a featherweight.
