Diaz Eyes February First Defense, Teiken Has Two Options

By Ernesto Castellanos, notifight.com

WBC super featherweight champion Gamaliel "Platano" Diaz (37-9-2, 17KOs) received a hero's welcome when he arrived back home to Mexico City. A few days ago in Japan, Diaz managed to pull off one of the biggest upsets of the year when he won a twelve round unanimous decision to capture the WBC crown from heavy favorite Takahiro Aoh.

Diaz's promoter, Dr. Fausto Daniel Garcia of Boxeo de Gala, announced that Diaz would make the first defense of his title in in February. They were aiming for a December return, but during the fight Diaz suffered a cut above his right eyebrow and he also injured his right elbow.

There is no confirmation on where Diaz will return. In order to secure the fight with Aoh, Diaz and his promoter had to give two future options to the Japanese boxer's promoter, Mr. Honda of Teiken Promotions. Honda may put together an immediate rematch with Aoh or set up another contest.
