Devon Alexander's Trainer on Brook, Mayweather, More

Trainer Kevin Cunningham has admitted Devon Alexander was interested in facing Floyd Mayweather instead of Kell Brook.

Brook was due to challenge Alexander for his IBF welterweight title this Saturday, but the fight was postponed for a second time after the American suffered a strained bicep in training.

The Sheffield man initially pulled out through injury and further doubts were cast over the bout when Floyd Mayweather suggested on Twitter that he was willing to fight Alexander next.

Mayweather has since announced a clash with Robert Guerrero for the WBC welterweight belt and Alexander insists he will still defend his title against Brook, but his trainer Cunningham has revealed he was tempted to abandon these plans.

"We have no control over what Floyd says or does, but you know if a Mayweather opportunity comes about we're definitely interested in it," he told Ringside Toe 2 Toe podcast.

"It's funny that Floyd would come out and say that. Maybe Floyd saw that Devon pulled out of the fight through injury and decided to put Devon's name out there.

"Maybe it was a negotiating ploy to draw out Guerrero. I don't know what's going on with that to be honest with you, but Devon pulled out because he's injured.

"If a Floyd fight was really to come our way and the opportunity really was there we'd seriously take a look at it. Just like Kell Brook if he had the opportunity to fight Floyd Mayweather."

Medical staff at NFL team St Louis Rams are helping Alexander with his rehabilitation and he is expected to resume training before the end of the month.

Cunningham is confident that a fully fit Alexander will be a class above Brook if a new date is found for their fight.

"I think Kell Brook's a young, strong fighter, but Devon's going to show him some things that he's never seen," he said.

"He's never faced anyone close to Devon Alexander. Devon has faced several guys who are above Kell Brook's level.

"Devon's a lot stronger than what people think he is. He's got great hand speed, he knows his way around the ring and I think if the fight takes place he'll take Brook to school."
