BoxingScene.com recently announced Devon Alexander's desire to face Paulie Malignaggi in his welterweight debut. Alexander recently signed a promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions. According to Alexander's manager Kevin Cunningham, the plan would be to face IBF champion Andre Berto after Malignaggi.
With Berto's promoter Lou DiBella advising BoxingScene that they aren't interested in facing the former unified junior welterweight champion coupled with rumors that HBO isn't interested in buying an Alexander-Malignaggi fight, the St Louis, MO native has set his sites on another target.
Selcuk Aydin of Turkey holds the WBC Silver welterweight title and is currently ranked #2 by the WBC. Aydin had been the WBC welterweight mandatory for years when Berto held the title. Alexander is currently ranked #1 by the WBC.
Cunningham advised BoxingScene that they would like to face Aydin if a fight versus Berto or Malignaggi cannot be made. The proposed box off would establish the clear mandatory challenger for the champion who is Floyd Mayweather, but Alexander would have to wait for the outcome of the rematch between Aydin and Jo Jo Dan, scheduled for November 19th in Turkey.
"If we can't make a fight against Berto or Malignaggi then we want Aydin for the WBC mandatory spot," said Cunningham.
