Denis Lebedev Could Be Facing Steve Cunningham Next
By Roman Grishin
According to WBA interim-cruiserweight king Denis Lebedev (23-1, 17KOs), if he doesn't secure a fight with full WBA champion Guillermo Jones (38-3-2, 30KOs), then he plans to target a fight with former two-time IBF champion Steve Cunningham (24-4, 12KOs), who recently lost a twelve round decision in a gutsy performance against Yoan Pablo Hernandez.
"First, I will go to Stuttgart to support Alexander Povetkin in his fight against Marco Huck [on February 25th]. Then I will begin to prepare for the next fight. Negotiations are underway for fights with Steve Cunningham and Guillermo Jones. I will fight with one of them. [My next] fight is scheduled for early April," Lebedev said.
Cunningham's one of the best. Doesn't change the fact that Lebedev's a huge cherry picker... Steve's coming off a loss and Leb's two previous bouts were against a pair of OAPs.
"huge cherry picker"?...Anyone who's fought Huck can't be that…Comment by Mikhnienko on 02-12-2012
Wtf? Why not fight guillermo jones for the title? cunningham vs lebedev is a good fight though
Jones is with Don King. I would assume he's the reason it isn't getting made.
he's one of the best in the division...duh!!
…Comment by MJ223 on 02-12-2012

Lebedev hits a good deal harder than Pablo. Not nearly as fast or explosive though. Fairly even fight. But I hate Leb pouncing on a guy with two straight losses.Comment by Spray_resistant on 02-12-2012
Steve could win a decision here but he has such a dodgey chin even though he has never been ko'd because of his ability to recover and survive but he is always hitting the canvas in fights.Post a Comment - View More User Comments (12)
