Miguel Hidalgo Gym of Puebla - Oscar de la Hoya’s cousin, Diego, a Mexicali resident, was beaten by the odds-on favorite Óscar Valdez, from Sonora, in the final bout of the 56 kg [123-pounds] category. This was the final competition before heading off to the Olympic qualifiers in Brazil, where it's going to determine the fighters who will participate in the London games.
In the biggest fight of the day - Valdez - who previously competed in Beijing in 2008, used his experience and won by a 23-10 margin to beat Diego De La Hoya, who beat Valdez in the past.
The national coach, Francisco Bonilla, said the fight was good and the greater experience of Valdez was key. Valdez said the victory gives him the confidence as he moves foward to the pre-Olympic qualifiers and he recognizes that De La Hoya's cousin is a tough opponent.
"I struggled a lot with the weight and it cost me a lot, but in the end I think we made a good fight and took the win and that was the most important thing," said Valdez.
De la Hoya complained about the lose and demanded a rematch, either in the amateur ring or when they enter the professional ranks.
Also on the card, the brother of professional fighters Carlos and Javier Molina, Oscar, won the 69 kg [152] category.
