According to Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, the only way Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will consider moving from his planned return on Cinco De Mayo weekend, May 2nd, is if Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao reach a deal to fight each other on the date.

“Obviously if Mayweather-Pacquiao happens, then it would be my obligation to go and talk to Canelo and kind of, maybe convince him to move out of that date but he's going on May [5th]. But this kid is determined, he wants to fight Cinco De Mayo," De La Hoya said.

In terms of a workaround, possibly having Canelo appear in a major fight in the co-feature of the Mayweather-Pacquiao card - De La Hoya says that option is unlikely. Canelo has appeared as the co-featured fighter in two pay-per-view events involving Mayweather. The Mexican star is no longer willing to be a co-feature to anyone.

"That would be impossible. You can get creative and do a split sites, which we've done before and Canelo can generate his own gate. But let me tell you this - Canelo is not going to be second fiddle to nobody. Canelo is a main event fighter, period," De La Hoya said.
