LAS VEGAS – Most of the questions at the Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan post-fight press conference were about a highly anticipated Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin showdown.
Oscar De La Hoya, Alvarez’s promoter, made it clear, though, that he has not been negotiating with Miguel Cotto for an Alvarez-Cotto rematch later this year. De La Hoya emphasized that making Alvarez-Golovkin is his top priority and that an Alvarez-Cotto rematch is not an option for Alvarez’s next fight.
“I’ve never mentioned Cotto,” De La Hoya said. “I am not talking to Cotto. I’m not negotiating with Cotto. Cotto is not even in the equation.”
The 35-year-old Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) has not fought since losing a unanimous decision to the 25-year-old Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) on November 21 at Mandalay Bay Events Center. Alvarez made the first defense of the WBC middleweight title he won from Cotto on Saturday night, when he scored a sensational sixth-round knockout of Amir Khan (31-4, 19 KOs) at T-Mobile Arena.
