Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is interested in making rematch between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. - if the Mexican superstar gets the bulk of the money.

De La Hoya feels Mayweather's time has passed and now it's Canelo's moment as the top name in the sport.

Canelo and Mayweather fought in 2013, when the young fighter lost a twelve round decision at a catch-weight of 152-pounds. That fight generated the third highest pay-per-view buyrate in boxing history with 2.2 million purchases and the second highest gate.

Canelo is back on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, when he defends his title against Amir Khan at a catch-weight of 155-pounds.

Mayweather retired in September after winning a twelve round decision over Andre Berto. Last weekend in an interview with Showtime, Mayweather discussed the possibility of a year-end return.

"People have been disappointed when they watched Mayweather's boring fights, but if he comes back I think it should be against Canelo," said De La Hoya to ESPN Deportes. "If all goes well this Saturday, [the negotiations] should be 70/30 for Canelo, it's Canelo's time. Mayweather in his last pay-per-view event (against Berto) generated 300 or 400 thousand homes. Canelo reached 900 thousand homes (vs. Miguel Cotto) - and that is a big difference, this is Canelo's time."

On the possible rematch with Mayweather, Eddy Reynoso, the manager of Canelo, said they are interested in the rematch but the terms must work for Canelo.

"Yes of course we are interested in that fight, because it's a thorn stuck in our side - but now it will be at our weight - 154-155 pounds is where Canelo is comfortable, but we do not want to anticipate anything......let's see first what happens with Khan and then we'll see what comes," Reynoso said.
