Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar de la Hoya is standing firm on his prior statement - that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is capable of shocking the world on May 6th, and in turn would cause the delay of a potential fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin in September.

Canelo (48-1-1, 34 KOs), who holds the WBO junior middleweight title, will jump up to a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds to fight Chavez Jr. at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.  Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) is scheduled to make a mandatory defense against Daniel Jacobs on March 18th at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Provided Canelo and Golovkin both win their upcoming fights, there are ongoing negotiations to have the two of them collide during Mexican Independence Day weekend in September.

De La Hoya says he is very motivated to make the fight between Canelo and Golovkin. If Canelo is upset, then there would obviously be a change of plans.

And, De La Hoya also cautions that a very good fight or a controversial outcome - one that creates an outcry for a rematch - would also be a factor in pushing back a Golovkin clash.

"I've said all along that Canelo will fight GGG in September," de la Hoya said to the Houston Chronicle. "We can't make the Golovkin fight yet, because we have to have this fight first. But, I'll say it again: The only way Canelo doesn't fight GGG in September is if he loses this fight against Chavez or if this fight is so exciting that the fans demand a rematch."

Golovkin was willing to fight Canelo in May, but De La Hoya says the boxing public was calling for the fight with Chavez Jr. and his company wanted to deliver what the fans were demanding.

"It's the fight the fans want, and it's the fight we want," de la Hoya said.
