De La Hoya Eyes Abner Mares vs. Leo Santa Cruz Clash

By Luke Furman

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is very interested in making a match between WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13KOs) and Leo Santa Cruz (23-0-1, 13KOs), the unbeaten IBF champion at bantamweight.

Santa Cruz saw action five times in 2012, eclipsing the busy schedule of super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire, who fought four times.

Mares wants to unify with Donaire, but the feud between their promoters is preventing the match from happening.

De La Hoya's company promotes both Mares and Santa Cruz. The two fighters have been featured on the same events and Santa Cruz has been asking Golden Boy to get him a fight with Mares.

"Of course [I would make that fight]. One of the biggest fights that can be made in Los Angeles, that would sell out the Staples Center, is Abner Mares vs. Leo Santa Cruz," De La Hoya said.

Since Donaire/Mares is stalled at the moment, this is a good fight. I could see Santa Cruz surprising some folks.
Moreno a much better boxer than Donaire was supposed to expose Mares too, just saying. Or are we gonna use…

The only fight that makes sense is Mares Donarie. I like Santa Cruz, while I think they would be entertaining, a fight with Nonito is what I want to see. Arum and ODLH need to stop being idiots and remember…
