On May 6th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the Mexican showdown takes place between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) and Julio Cesar Chavez. Should Alvarez come out victorious, it could set up a bout between him and unified middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) in the fall.

And the founder of Golden Boy Promotions (who promotes Alvarez) says that Golovkin - who defeated Daniel Jacobs in March to retain his IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC titles - deciding not to go through with a fight in June, makes that mega fight more of a possibility.

"It does, it does help the cause and look, 2017, we have a tremendous opportunity to have the best year in boxing in recent years with 'Canelo'-Chavez, with Anthony Joshua and (Wladimir) Klitschko, with a possibility of 'Canelo'-'Triple G' in September," said De La Hoya to BoxingScene.com.

The 'Golden Boy' expects this to be a banner year for the sport of boxing.

"I mean boxing can be back in a big way. So as a promoter that's my responsibility and believe me - I'm not going to let nobody down," promised De La Hoya.

The between Canelo and Chavez Jr. takes place at a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds. Canelo, who currently owns the WBO junior middleweight title, has already make it clear that he intends to move his career forward as a middleweight.  The plan is to have Canelo fight in September, during Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Golovkin was initially going to fight in June as part of a big event in homeland of Kazakhstan, and potentially against WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders of the UK. After a tough twelve round fight in March, Golovkin's handlers felt it was best to allow his body to rest instead of jumping straight back into a training camp.
