According to Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (46-1-1, 32KOs), a fight with Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) will eventually happen.

Golovkin, who holds the WBA/IBO/IBF middleweight belts, is the mandatory challenger to Canelo's WBC title.

The WBC allowed both fighters to take interim bouts before a mandatory fight in the fall.

Golovkin is back on April 23rd against Dominic Wade at The Forum in Los Angeles, California. Canelo returns on May 7th, when he faces Amir Khan at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

De La Hoya had a recent meeting with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. He confirms that there was discussion of a bout between Canelo and Golovkin at the AT&T Stadium. There was also discussions about Canelo fighting at the venue in general, against other opponents.

The former six division champion turned promoter will not confirm if that fight is going to take place in the fall. He appears to indicate that a Canelo-Golovkin showdown will require some additional building in order to make a more significant pay-per-view contest.

There are very few experts who expect the fight to happen in the fall.

“[Golovkin] is a possibility [for AT&T Stadium], obviously it came up,” De La Hoya told the Los Angeles Times of the meeting with Jones. “Is he going to fight him? Absolutely, that’s no issue whatsoever. But the question is when. Our thoughts are that the fight is going to eventually happen.

“As you know, we have to build this fight up to be the next super-fight. And, yes, it will be the next super-fight. The difference with this one [and Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao] is there will be action, there will be knockdowns — probably a knockout — so it’s a matter of focusing all of our energies on May 7 with Amir Khan and then we’ll take it from there.”

“Jerry Jones and I agreed Canelo has a difficult task in front of him because of Amir Khan’s speed. Stylistically, it’s one of those fights for Canelo, like Mayweather or [Cuba's Erislandy] Lara, where he’s facing speed with his power. So we agreed let’s wait until May 8 and proceed with our conversations.”
