| De La Hoya Admits To His Demons, Considered Suicide

By Mel Ohlhoft During an interview with Univision, Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya said he thought about suicide and continues to attend rehab because of his additictions to drugs and alcohol. The network provided an translated transcript of the interview. De La Hoya has cleaned up his life, staying sober for the last three months and joined Alcoholics Anonymous. De La Hoya retired in 2009 after a 16-year career. "Within couple of years, just thinking if my life was even worth it. I don't have the strength, I don't have the courage to take my own life but I was thinking about it," De La Hoya said. "There were drugs, my drug of choice was cocaine and alcohol, hmm. Cocaine was recent. The last 2 years, last 2 1/2 years and I depended more in the alcohol than the cocaine," De La Hoya said. "It took me to a place where I felt safe, it took me to a place where I felt as if nobody can say anything to me, it took me to a place where I just can reach out and grab my mom." He also discussed his unfaithful incidents which led to a separation with his wife. The two are back together. I guess boxers go to a lot of parties and cocaine is the No.1 party drug. |

The problem with people nowadays, specially in the U.S., is that everything is related to money. A person is succesful if he makes money, therefore if you become filthy rich like Oscar.... you stop enjoying the basics of life. |
