A fight that appeared to be a done deal is now in doubt. The HBO televised co-feature for May 21, was going to showcase a battle of former light heavyweight champions, with Chad Dawson (29-1, 17KOs) meeting Adrian Diaconu (27-2, 15KOs) in a crossroads fight. The televised main event will involve Jean Pascal, who defends his WBC/IBO light heavyweight titles against Bernard Hopkins in a rematch of last December's controversial draw.
After a recent meeting between Diaconu and his promoter, InterBox, an issue arose that threatens the fight with Dawson. Promoter Yvon Michel of GYM, who handle Pascal, discussed the situation with BoxingScene.com. Michel is co-promoting the May 21 event with Golden Boy Promotions, and he was instrumental in putting Dawson-Diaconu together.
I hear that there are some issues with the Chad Dawson fight, and that Adrian Diaconu could be out?
"Several weeks ago, I made a deal with his promoter, Jean Bedard. When I made the deal with Jean Bedard, I was never told that there could have been any problem with Adrian Diaconu. So, we made the deal, and then, Jean Bedard met with him. And, like I said, I guess that some issues arose, and I'm not even sure if these are issues related to the fight."
Can you take me through the entire scenario?
"Several weeks ago, I made a deal with his promoter, Jean Bedard. We made the deal, and I sent him the contract. He told me that there were just some minor changes on the deal, but that in principle, everything was fine. So at that time I had informed Gary Shaw [who promotes Dawson] and HBO about it. That we had an agreement. And then, it took a while, and, during that time, Jean Bedard met with Adrian."
"Adrian, apparently, had some issue with them that they didn't tell me what it was about. So, last week, when Jean Bedard met with Adrian Diaconu, they didn't sign the deal. So Bedard called me saying that they had a show that they were going to finish, the Lucian Bute show in Montreal. And then that they were going to meet with Adrian again this week, but that he felt at that time that he was going to be able to arrange things."
"But, I guess some other unfortunate issues arose over the weekend, I don't know. I'm a bit confused as to where it stands right now. But I spoke to Jean Bedard today, and he says that he has a meeting with Adrian Diaconu tomorrow morning and that they're going to talk. What Jean Bedard told me today is that it's still possible that the fight is going to happen, but that they have to get done with their meeting and discuss the issues that they have together.
Jean Bedard also said that might, actually, not just might, but that he will also proposes something different. I guess that it's still possible that Adrian Diaconu is going to fight Chad Dawson, but that depends on Adrian. But Jean Bedard will have some other options for him as well. That's the way that he stated it to me."
