Ryan Burton catches up with super middleweight contender Andre Dirrell to discuss his upcoming comeback, the fight with Darryl Cunningham, and more.

Super middleweight Andre Dirrell is eager to step on the ring on December 30th in a Showtime televised fight from Palm Springs, California. Dirrell (19-1, 13KOs) will face veteran Darryl Cunningham (24-2, 10KOs), who was previously scheduled to face Kelly Pavlik in a failed match earlier this year. Dirrell has been inactive since March 27, 2010, where he suffered a neurological damage after Arthur Abraham struck him while he was down. Dirrell won by disqualification, but the injury inflicted by Abraham required months of rehab.

By Thomas Gerbasi - The way Darryl Cunningham thought things were going to play out, last night was supposed to be when he fought the biggest fight of his life against Kelly Pavlik in Youngstown, Ohio. That didn’t happen. And while the biggest story of the past week has been Pavlik’s sudden withdrawal from the Showtime-televised bout due to his unhappiness with his purse for this fight ($50,000) as well as for a future one with IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute ($1.35 million), the reality of the situation is that Pavlik, should he mend fences with promoter Top Rank, will likely get another big fight eventually and this little debacle will be forgotten. But what about Cunningham? You don’t see too many big opportunities like this coming around for 36-year old prizefighters who have never been on the big stage before. So when the Detroit native got the bad news from his manager Carlos Llinas Tuesday morning, it was not only a shock, but a crushing blow to a good guy who was just waiting for his time to shine. “I’ve got to tell you something,” Llinas said. “He had a look on his face,” recalled Cunningham. “I said ‘What’s going on?’” “Kelly Pavlik pulled out of the fight.” “Quit playin’.” An hour later, Cunningham was on the phone, recounting the worst moment of his professional life, but being more than gracious about it.

According to Jack Loew, trainer for super middleweight Kelly Pavlik, the boxer's mood began to change after a telephone conversation with his manager Cameron Dunkin last Friday. Pavlik and Dunkin discussed his purse for a planned November clash with IBF champion Lucian Bute.

Sources with direct knowledge of the negotiations advised BoxingScene.com that Mikkel Kessler was getting "far less" than the reported $3.5 million to fight IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute.

The timing of Kelly Pavlik’s surprising withdrawal from a tune-up fight Saturday night and a subsequent title fight was far from good.

Kelly Pavlik’s promoter suspects the embattled former middleweight champion’s abrupt withdrawal from a tune-up fight against Darryl Cunningham had more to do with desire than money.

If there's anything worse than underpaying a fighter, it is directly questioning a fighter's desire to get in the ring.

Super middleweight Daryl Cunningham was packing his clothing and ring attire for the trip from Detroit to Youngstown when he heard the news that Kelly Pavlik had pulled out of their ShoBox main event on Saturday night.

YOUNGSTOWN – Former World Middleweight Champion and current World Boxing Council (WBC) No. 1-rated super middleweight contender KELLY “The Ghost” PAVLIK’s professional boxing comeback took a wrong turn inasmuch as Pavlik withdrew from his upcoming 10-round bout against Darryl Cunningham today. The Pavlik-Cunningham bout was scheduled to take place on Saturday at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown, OH, and was to be televised live on SHOWTIME® as the main event of a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation. Both the broadcast and the live event have been canceled. Ticketholders can get a refund by returning their tickets to the place of purchase.
