WBC Junior Welterweight champion Danny Garcia is sitting atop the 140 pound division patiently waiting for his next assignment. Garcia is slated to face the winner of the Lamont Peterson-Lucas Matthysse fight taking place this Saturday night as it will serve as the second round of the unofficial 140 pound tourney Golden Boy is putting on.
BoxingScene caught up with Garcia and asked about his thoughts on the upcoming clash between his two potential foes.
“It's going to be a good fight. The fans are going to win that night. It's going to be a good fight. Both fighters are real hungry. Matthysse lost two close fights before when he got a chance at Zab [Judah] for a title. I know he's fighting for the title again so he's going to be hungry. Lamont Peterson had a lot of questions about him with the testing and stuff like that so he's out to show the world that he's the real deal. So anytime you got two young, hungry fighters in there it's going to be a tremendous fight” said Garcia.
While Garcia will have to tangle with one of the two aforementioned champions in the fall, one fighter he has also been mentioned to be a possible opponent for is Floyd Mayweather Jr. Richard Schaefer disclosed in a recent article on BoxingScene that Garcia could be a possible opponent down the line for the reigning pound for pound king.
Garcia has recently made comments that a move to 147 could be soon and he was asked about his thoughts concerning a Mayweather fight.
“Oh man, see, this is what I was born for. I was born for the spotlight, the big stage. I come to life on the big stage man when the lights turn on. So if that was to ever happen I'd be excited and I'd be happy and just grind it out” said Garcia.
There still appears work to be done for Garcia before he can reach that next level but he plans to continue winning in 2013 to get closer to that goal.
“You're going to continue to see domination. Dominate my opponents with skill, speed, and power and most of all being smart”.
