PHILADELPHIA – If the New York State Athletic Commission suspends Angel Garcia, Danny Garcia will pull out of his fight against Keith Thurman.
Danny Garcia told BoxingScene.com following a media workout Wednesday at his gym that he won’t fight Thurman without his father/trainer in his corner. Angel Garcia revealed earlier Wednesday that he will meet with the NYSAC sometime in the week before Danny Garcia’s March 4 fight against Thurman to discuss his boorish behavior during a press conference to officially announce the bout January 18 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Angel Garcia, one of boxing’s most controversial figures, caused an ugly incident that afternoon by trying to attack Thurman after the WBA world welterweight champion promised he would knock out Danny Garcia when they meet at Barclays Center (CBS). Angel Garcia also repeatedly referred to Thurman as a “n*gga” and a “bitch.”
Thurman, who is black, said after the press conference that he wasn’t offended by anything Angel Garcia said or did. Nevertheless, Angel Garcia’s distasteful display prompted some media outlets and fans to question whether he should be suspended for his actions.
If that happens, Danny Garcia said, “No, I won’t fight. Nope. What got us here is teamwork. And I know if they wanna do that, then it’s just something personal. You know what I mean? Like my dad said, we’ve seen worse things.”
If he is suspended and denied the chance to work his son’s corner for the Thurman fight, Angel Garcia said it would be entirely up to Danny Garcia to decide whether to move forward with perhaps the biggest fight of his career against Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs), of Clearwater, Florida.
“I’m not banned from nothing that I know of,” Angel Garcia said. “But at the end of the day, if anybody’s banned – if they ban me from the fight, and if Danny wants to proceed with his second, [it] would be his brother [Erik], I don’t have a problem with it. But the thing is this, if Danny says, ‘If my dad’s not in the corner, there would no fight,’ then there’s no fight. But I can’t make that call. At the end of the day, he’s the boss, not me.”
Erik Garcia is an assistant to Angel Garcia. Danny Garcia (33-0, 19 KOs) trusts his older brother, but his father has been his head trainer throughout his amateur and professional career. The WBC world welterweight champion from Philadelphia doesn’t think a nationally televised, 147-pound title unification fight against an elite, unbeaten opponent would be an ideal time to learn how he’d fare without his father in his corner.
“Who’s gonna work the corner? A ghost?,” Danny Garcia said. “I believe and I trust in my brother. But like I said before, this is teamwork. And at the end of the day, we got here because we’re a team. You understand? We had a long training camp together and, you know, the chemistry that me and my dad have means a lot. It’s a key to victory. So I don’t know if they’re trying to play a mental game. I can’t play into that. So right now, I would say no.”
Regardless, Danny Garcia doesn’t think the NYSAC will suspend his father for his actions last month in Brooklyn.
“No, I’m not concerned about that,” Danny Garcia said. “I think they just wanna tell him, ‘Just don’t let it happen again.’ Basically, I think that’s what they’re gonna tell him. Things like that. ‘Be careful what you say.’ My dad said he won’t speak at the next press conference if it’s a big issue. He don’t care.”
