Daniel Jacobs: record, next fight and profile →

Jaime Munguia won’t fight Jermall Charlo on June 18, but he might get a chance to face a former middleweight champion during that month.

Daniel Jacobs left London on Sunday with a fourth defeat on his professional record. Keith Connolly, Jacobs’ manager, just hopes promoters treat the former IBF middleweight champion as the figurative winner of the 12-round super middleweight fight he lost to John Ryder. London’s Ryder won a split decision, but Gabe Rosado, Jacobs’ rival, countless fans on social media and Connolly expressed that Jacobs “was robbed” by two of the judges.

One of the sayings that comes up often in other sports is that, sometimes, the ball bounces your way. In boxing, the variation would probably be that sometimes the cards bounce your way. In November 2019, John Ryder gave then-WBA and Ring magazine super middleweight titlist Callum Smith hell. Many thought Ryder did enough to win. All three judges disagreed. The cards bounced to Smith.

Super middleweight contender John Ryder outlanded Daniel Jacobs 135-123 in total punches, 121-94 in power punches, to win an upset twelve round split decision.

Even Gabe Rosado thinks Daniel Jacobs beat John Ryder. Rosado, who lost a controversial split decision to Jacobs in November 2020, stated during DAZN’s post-fight coverage Saturday night that Jacobs was “robbed” in that streaming service’s main event from Alexandra Palace in London. Ryder defeated Jacobs by split decision in what was a very competitive 12-round, WBA 168-pound elimination match.

John Ryder earned a shot at WBA super-middleweight champion David Morrell with a split points decision over Daniel Jacobs at Alexandra Palace in North London. In a fight of two halves, Jacobs cruised through the first half as Ryder struggled to find the range, before dramatically coming on from round seven.

Daniel Jacobs believes he will fare much better against Canelo Alvarez the second time around. The former middleweight titleholder from Brooklyn is looking to revive his career at the super middleweight limit against London’s John Ryder this Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Alexandra Palace in London.

This weekend is a big one for trainer Tony Sims. He has two mainstays of his Essex stable in competition and while both are on the brink of hugely-significant fights, John Ryder and Felix Cash have plenty of work ahead of them at the Alexandra Palace if they are to move forwards.
