Dana White: I Think Mayweather vs. McGregor Will Happen!

AS previously reported, the proposed super bout between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and undefeated five division world champion Floyd Mayweather inched closer to reality when UFC president Dana White told TMZ that he wouldn’t “stand in the way of Conor making that type of money.”

White was also a guest on Conan and shared his thoughts on the possible bout.

“I do – I do think it’s going to happen,” White told host Conan O’Brien. “I think it’s going to be a tough deal. There are obviously a lot of egos involved in this deal and a lot of people, so that always makes it tougher. But on the flip side, there’s so much money involved.  I just don’t see how it doesn’t happen.”

“It would be boxing. No kicking, no elbows, just straight-up boxing, in a boxing ring with gloves and the whole deal. A lot of things make this fight intriguing but the reality is this — anybody who has ever seen Floyd Mayweather, he’s this big (motioning at his small size). Conor McGregor is huge".

Mayweather announced this week during a tour of the UK that he is unretired in order to take a fight against McGregor and there are reports of a hold on the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for June 10th allowing the fight to be booked at that time.

After announcing the end of his retirement, Mayweather implored the UFC champion to accept the financial terms and sign the fight deal.

“I don't wanna hear any more excuses about the money,” Mayweather said during his UK Undefeated Tour. “Sign the paperwork with the UFC so you can fight me in June, simple and plain. Let's fight in June. You're the B-side; I'm the A-side.”

White believes the fight will be an interesting mix of skills and of men at different points in their careers.

“Conor McGregor is huge, He’s 27 years old, He’s in the prime of his career,” said White.  “Floyd is 40, Floyd always had problems with southpaws. Conor is a southpaw, and Conor hits hard. When he hits people, they go.”

Mayweather has not fought since earning a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto in September of 2015, running his undefeated record to 49-0.

Previous to that, the 40-year-old beat Manny Pacquiao via unanimous decision in another highly anticipated fight.

McGregor’s last fight was a second round TKO victory over Eddie Alvarez that earned him the UFC lightweight title, making him the only person to hold two UFC belts at the same time, as he was also the featherweight champion.
