Cox Using Tyson Fury as Inspiration To Shock George Groves

UNDERDOG Jamie Cox will use Tyson Fury as his inspiration when he takes on George Groves.
  
Cox challenges the WBA super middleweight champion tomorrow in the quarter-finals of the World Boxing Super Series at Wembley Arena.

The 31-year-old has been given little chance, with most expecting Groves to cruise to victory.

The talk this week has all been about when and where Groves will face Chris Eubank Jnr early next year.

But Cox is out to spoil those plans and pointed to Fury’s 2015 upset of former WBA, IBF, IBO and WBO heavyweight title-holder Wladimir Klitschko.

“I can understand it, he’s the world champion and the odds will favour George, but so did they when Tyson beat Klitschko,” said Cox.

“And Fury handed out a boxing lesson that night. So it’s a big fight. Will I hand out a boxing lesson? Whatever comes my way, we’re ready.”

Cox’s inclusion in the money-spinning tournament has raised a few eyebrows, despite a record of 24 fights without defeat.

A talented amateur, he won gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

But a serious hand injury, an assault conviction in 2010 and then a spell in prison last year before he was released on appeal and his conviction overturned, have all stalled his career.

Now he is looking to finally fulfil his childhood dream to become world champion.

“When I was a kid, what inspired me to be a boxer was to become a world champion,” the Swindon man said.

“I don’t dwell on the past about anything, it’s all about the future.”

Organized by Comosa AG, the World Boxing Super Series kicked off in September 2017, featuring the Cruiserweight and Super Middleweight divisions. In each weight class, eight elite boxers will battle it out in a bracket-style elimination tournament, with four quarter-finals (fall 2017), two semi-finals (early 2018) and one final (May 2018). This makes for seven top fights per weight class, and a total of 14 fights in Season One to be staged in premier venues around the globe.
