BoxingScene.com was advised by promoter Lou DiBella that he plans to further explore a potential junior middleweight encounter between unbeaten Andre Berto (26-0, 20KOs) and WBA champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28KOs). The fight is being targeted for the fall.
Berto, the WBC welterweight champion, would move up in weight to meet Cotto. Although Berto is considered a short welterweight at 5'8, he is actually taller than the 5'7 Cotto.
DiBella has discussed the fight on a few occasions with Cotto's promoter Bob Arum, the CEO of Top Rank. Cotto was one of two frontrunners to face Manny Pacquiao on November 13. Top Rank made a decision, as expected, to match Pacquiao with Antonio Margarito, which leaves Cotto free and clear. DiBella's decision to further pursue a fight with Cotto was dependent on the outcome of the Pacquiao sweepstakes.
Berto had asked DiBella to make a fight with Cotto when the Puerto Rican star was still a champion at 147-pounds. Following his knockout loss to Pacquiao in November 2009, Cotto moved up to 154-pounds to win the WBA title from Yuri Foreman in June.
"We've [DiBella and Top Rank] discussed it several times. Based on their styles, there is no better fight to put live on HBO than a fight between Berto and Miguel Cotto. Andre Berto wants the fight. We're going to discuss it and I think there is no better fight to put live on HBO in the fall," DiBella told BoxingScene.com.
