Cotto on Mayweather: We're Ready To Shock The World!

By Jhonny Gonzalez

WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30KOs) says he is "ready to shock the world on May 5th" - when he defends his title against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Cotto is training in Florida with his his new coach, Pedro Diaz of Cuba. They are putting together a plan of attack to overcome Mayweather's very difficult style of boxing. Cotto first used Diaz for last December's stoppage of Antonio Margarito.

"Pedro is well known for studying the opponents. In these two cases, [Margarito and Mayweather] there are totally two different [training strategies] because these fighters are completely different. Margarito was the attacker, so we had to control his fight in the center of the ring to limit him a bit. We now have a more elusive [fighter] in Mayweather. His mobility in the ring is much higher than that of Margarito. Between Margarito and Mayweather, Pedro has changed a lot of the technique and tactics," Cotto said to Joseph Sanchez.

Cotto is also not surprised with Mayweather's lack of pre-fight trash talking.

"I believe that he thinks he knows what he's going to face on May 5th - but he doesn't know. He has no idea who Miguel Cotto really is. He will discover who Miguel Cotto is on May 5. [With Mayweather], we haven't seen the stereotypical image that we're used to seeing. There has been a lot of respect and the fists will do the talking on May 5," Cotto said.
