BoxingScene.com has learned that a March 12 rematch between former world champion female boxer Christy Martin and Dakota Stone -- whom Martin defeated by majority decision in September 2009 -- could be in jeopardy due to rib damage suffered in training by Martin.
Martin and Stone are to meet on the Showtime pay-per-view televised undercard of a main event featuring WBA junior middleweight king Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 knockouts) against ex-belt-holder Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 22 KOs) from the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.
The fight is promoted by Top Rank Promotions' CEO, Bob Arum and rival Don King.
Martin (49-5-3, 31 knockouts), who turns 43 in June, and Stone (9-8-5, one KO), who turned 42 on Feb. 16, were last in the ring against each other when Martin earned the WBC's vacant light middleweight (154 pounds) belt.
A source revealed that Martin is being examined by Las Vegas-based Dr. Robert Voy and that Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum, is expecting a report from him on Thursday morning.
"But it doesn't look good," according to the source. "It is a real injury, perhaps broken ribs."
