Christina Hammer: record, next fight and profile →
This Saturday night in Atlantic City, a major bout in women's boxing is taking place with undefeated middleweights Claressa Shields and Christina Hammer colliding to unify the entire division with the WBA, WBO, IBF, WBC world titles at stake. Showtime will televise.
NEW YORK – The idea initially was to assign three female judges and a female referee to the Claressa Shields-Christina Hammer fight. When one of the fighters’ handlers objected to one of the three female judges suggested by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, they settled on a male judge, Guido Cavalleri, to replace her. Italy’s Cavalleri will join two female judges – Philadelphia’s Lynne Carter and New York’s Robin Taylor – at ringside Saturday night to judge the Shields-Hammer middleweight title unification fight in Atlantic City.

Whatever transpires this weekend, there has been plenty of entertainment value to be found in the buildup to the World middleweight championship showdown between Claressa Shields and Christina Hammer. While not necessarily all in good fun, the trash talk between the two also shouldn’t be mistaken for deep-seated hatred.

Notre Dame women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw wasn’t the only prominent sports figure that spoke out against gender inequality Thursday. On the same day McGraw made an impassioned plea during an interview prior to the women’s Final Four, Claressa Shields expressed her own views on the topic while she was interviewed as part of a media workout in Miami. Shields, the IBF/WBC/WBO women’s middleweight champion, is finishing up training camp there for her 10-round, 160-pound title unification fight against Germany’s Christina Hammer on April 13 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
By Michael Rosenthal - Lucia Rijker, arguably the greatest female boxer ever, was asked a generation ago how she felt about those who constantly questioned whether a women’s place was in a boxing ring. She turned to the questioner, expressionless, and said with utter sincerity: “It’s my essence, it’s who I a...
