During a recent interview, WBC super welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez said he was aiming to surpass the achievements of Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. - regarded as the greatest Mexican fighter of all-time and of the best boxers in history.
“I started younger than Chavez, I’ve achieved more things at my age and I’ve got a better grasp of boxing. He had great combinations, but I know more about boxing. I want to be better than Julio Cesar Chavez," Canelo said.
Chavez Sr. was advised of the comments and responded.
"Well, ha ha, what I can tell, huh? Records are made to be broken but I really think [Canelo] has not fought anybody yet, even with being number one in the world - he is being carried in his career with tweezers. Imagine, I beat 27 former world champions. I find it very difficult [to beat that accomplishment], but hopefully things will go well [for Canelo]. I almost always defended my championship with number one contender, and I told you I fought with 27 former world champions. You know my record, I see it as almost being impossible [to break that], but I wish him luck, hopefully, as a Mexican," Chavez said.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. also spoke wout about Canelo's comments.
"[Canelo] has to act with facts. Don't say that without demonstrating merit. My Dad fought hard to place the name of Mexico at the top," Chavez Jr. said.
Chavez Sr. fought 116 times - achieving 107 wins, 89 KO’s, two draws and six losses - and he was a six time world champion in three weight divisions. He’d gone 90 fights undefeated in thirteen years, when he lost to Frankie Randall. He still holds the record for the most title fights with 37, of which 31 were KO’s. He also holds the world record for the most consecutive defenses of world titles with 27.
So are you saying Canelo can't "Beat It"? As for Jr, sounds like he "Wanna Be Starin' Somethin". JCC jr should take a look at "The Man in the Mirror". That dope smoker is nothing but a "Smoothe Criminal". Haha…Comment by raskat on 11-30-2012
Chavez is overrated, great resume on paper but he's not the best mexican fighter ever.
The man was a warrior but he is very much overhyped.Comment by mikeMack on 11-30-2012
Both fighters have a lot to brag about. Chavez Sr. Proved himself and Canelo is trying to make a name. So why worry about it. Chavez is a living legend. Canelo aspires to be remembered as great. Their mexicans does…Post a Comment - View More User Comments (52)
