BoxingScene.com recently spoke to Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. who was in Las Vegas this weekend to provide analysis of Andre Ward's controversial unanimous decision victory over Sergey Kovalev at the T-Mobile Arena.
One of the topics discussed was the rise of WBC, IBO, WBA, IBF middleweight world champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin, who has used the moniker "Mexican Style" during his rapid ascension since his American soil debut.
The Mexican Style moniker has given Golovkin a sizable following among the Mexcican fans in Southern California.
Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez has said that he patterned his fighter's style after that of Chavez. While he acknowledges that Golovkin is a good fighter, Chavez doesn't see any resemblance in the way they fight.
"Abel Sanchez is a great friend of mine and a great trainer but I think we are very different. Golovkin is very rustic and basic and I was at a different level," a smiling Chavez told BoxingScene.com.
Chavez's son, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., is targeting a fight with Golovkin in 2017. Chavez Jr. is fighting in the super middleweight division next month in Mexico. The fight with Golovkin was seriously discussed at one point in 2014, but the negotiations fell apart after Chavez Jr. become involved in a legal dispute with his former promoter Top Rank.
