Former three division world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. is hoping that by next week a deal will be finalized for an HBO Pay-Per-View fight between his son Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32KOs) and fellow Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34KOs).
There are serious ongoing negotiations to stage the fight on Cinco De Mayo weekend, May 6th. The contracted catch-weight being discussed, says Chavez Sr., is 165-pounds.
Chavez Jr. returned to the ring earlier this month and won a hard-fought ten round unanimous decision over Germany's Dominik Britsch (32-3-1, 11KOs) in Monterrey, Mexico. Canelo's last fight took place in September, when he captured the WBO junior middleweight title with a knockout of Liam Smith.
According to Chavez Sr., there are no issues with the catch-weight of 165, but right now the two sides are working out the issues related to the money.
Chavez believes the fight will be very successful on pay-per-view and it will be a very big ticket seller with even the casual boxing fans - especially if they decided to stage the contest in the state of Texas.
"The fight is being negotiated, they are in talks. The talks are very advanced, and that fight would be done on May 6. They are fixed at [the fight being] at 165 pounds and are now [discussing] the money," Chavez Sr. said to ESPN Deportes.
"Everything is going well, let's hope that by the end of the year the fight will be finalized. That fight will break the attendance record if the fight is made in Texas, [it will break] my record of 70 thousand people [in the Alamodome]."
"Canelo rose up [with his standing in Mexico] because of the indiscipline of my son Julio, but thank God he resumed his career with seriousness and discipline, and he proved that he is fit for anyone."
