The President of the World Boxing Council, Jose Sulaiman, is split with his opinions on the September 15th head to head battle between two boxing events in Las Vegas. At the MGM Grand, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will defend the WBC's junior middleweight title against Josesito Lopez, while Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will defend his WBC middleweight against Sergio Martinez at the Thomas & Mack Center.
So far, the September 15 middleweight championship bout between Sergio Martinez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is still on as scheduled. Due to the number of notable athletes who have tested positive for performance enhancing drugs this year alone, random drug testing has served as a major storyline for any big boxing event these days. There’s a legitimate sidebar that comes with the middleweight title fight, though for the moment the issue is being addressed head on.
NEW YORK — Promoters of the competing event Sept. 15 in Las Vegas have touted their card as “free-per-view,” a shot at the possible pricetag of $65 fight fans will have to pay to watch the Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. showdown in HD that night. Promoter Bob Arum nevertheless believes there still will be plenty of customers who’ll buy HBO Pay-Per-View’s four-fight show headlined by the long-awaited middleweight battle between Argentina’s Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KOs) and Mexico’s Chavez (46-0-1, 32 KOs), the WBC’s 160-pound champion.
NEW YORK — Bob Arum made sure to present Julio Cesar Chavez with a cake commemorating his 50th birthday when the press tour for his son’s career-defining fight stopped in Manhattan last week. Arum also gave Mexico’s most famous fighter a lot of credit for helping Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. become the type of middleweight the Hall-of-Fame promoter could match against Sergio Martinez without worrying that he’d be embarrassed. That couldn’t have happened a couple years ago, when the younger Chavez couldn’t be trusted to train properly and the elder Chavez couldn’t be counted upon to help his son change the bad habits that prohibited him from reaching his potential.

The session took place in the TV Azteca studios, where Zanfer Box – Chavez Jr’s co-promoter - insisted that tickets are moving along at an exceptional rate. For nearly his entire career, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32KO) has been accused of being many things by many in the media and the boxing public. ‘Fighter’ was almost never one of them, especially among his peers. Ask Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28KO) and his handlers their opinion of Chavez Jr. a year ago, and words “coward,” “fraud” and “protected” would immediately fly out of their collective mouths.
Pound-for-pound fighter Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez is predicting a knockout victory in the seventh round, when he challenges WBC middleweight champion Julio César Chávez Jr. on September 15th at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Chavez (46-0-1, 32KOs) and Martinez (49-2-2, 28KOs) have been predicting stoppage victories. Martinez is tired of the talk, he wants to damage Chavez Jr. for the numerous things that were hurled at the Argentine star by the champion's father.
The ongoing media tour to promote the upcoming middleweight clash, between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32KOs) and Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28KOs), has already become a heated affair as both fighters have hurled insults at each other. Chavez's father, Julio Sr., has also jumped into the fray by daring Martinez to stand and fight like a man when he faces his son on September 15th at the Thomas & Mack Center.
