Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is coming off a controversial win over the always tough Brian Vera as many felt Vera should’ve been awarded the victory. When I spoke to Chavez immediately after the fight, he informed he did not feel a rematch with Vera was necessary.
Things have certainly changed since then as there have been talks of a rematch taking place early next year. Chavez Jr still feels he won the fight convincingly but would be willing to fight a rematch if it would clear any doubt people may have.
“Well, if the people want to see that fight, we have to give it to them. But I thought I won the [first] fight. It wasn’t my best performance and I agree with that. I had a year of inactivity and a lot of problems. But I think I got my rhythm and I think a rematch would be good if the people still have doubt. I don’t think there’s doubt but I just didn’t look my best or in the best form” informed Chavez.
Chavez wasn’t very active in their fight as it was Vera who was the busier of the two and doubled Chavez’s punch output. When asked what he would do different in a rematch, Chavez pointed to his activity but also to definitively end things.
“Just throw more punches. Knock him out, hurt him and beat him more clearly. That’s what the people really want to see but definitely I feel I beat him. Brian Vera never did anything to me. He was throwing punches but missing all the time. He gave it his all but he never did anything to win the fight” Chavez would tell BoxingScene.
While a Vera rematch is a possibility, Chavez also informed he’d be more interested in another fight at 160 or 168 against a bigger name. Chavez feels he would be more motivated and benefit from fighting a big fight and possibly for a title.
“I would be more interested in fighting for a title at 160 pounds or 168 because those are fights that motivate me more and I would fight harder. I think I would look better. I can make whatever weight with time and with hard work. I can make 160. It’s a challenge [I set for]for myself to make 160, win the title and win the rematch” revealed Chavez.
It will be interesting to see what way Chavez chooses to go as far as picking an opponent. Despite who he fights, Chavez is looking to have a stellar 2014 and work his way back to the top.
