Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has fired back at 50-year-old legend, Bernard Hopkins. A few days ago on BoxingScene.com, Hopkins verbally assaulted Carl Froch for his contradicting statements on fighting him. While initially expressing his interest in a fight, Froch turned his back on the match - in favor of sitting out until a June battle with Chavez Jr.
"He says it's a lose-lose situation. But he's in a lose-lose situation if he fights somebody that we know he can beat. I don't think anybody, at least I think, is picking Chavez to beat Carl Froch. Carl Froch is looking for the easy way out," Hopkins told BoxingScene.com.
Chavez will first return on April 18, potentially in Los Angeles, against Polish contender Andrzej Fonfara. If Chavez wins, then a June fight is being proposed against Froch.
In response to Hopkins, Chavez is proposing a tournament at super middleweight. In a fantasy proposal, Chavez made a request to Hopkins to appear on his undercard in a co-featured fight against WBO/IBO/WBC-interim middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin - and then the winners of both fights will face each other at the end of the year.
That scenario will never happen, as Golovkin has no intention of moving up to 168 in the near future and he also has a contract with cable network HBO, while Chavez is going to be an NBC/Showtime boxer.
"Hopkins, I respect him for his achievements, but I'd love to make a proposal. On my fight with Froch in the summer, we can do a tournament at 168 pounds. He fights with Gennady Golovkin on the same card, and then the winners face each other. I think Hopkins has been a legendary fighter, and surely few have achieved what he achieved, but I'm not an easy option as he thinks. Of course if I did beat Froch and he beats Golovkin, then of course I would love to face him. It would be a great achievement in my career [to fight Hopkins]," Chavez told ESPN Deportes.
