Former champion Celestino Caballero is upset after the executive vice president of World Boxing Association (WBA), Gilberto Jesus Mendoza, said the boxer is not the mandatory challenger to the "regular" featherweight champion Jonathan Victor Barros. The clarification came after Caballero tried to protest Barros' upcoming fight on February 18 in Panama against Mexico's Marco Lopez.
Rogelio Espiño, the legal adviser for Caballero, argued that while the WBA may not have listed Caballero as the mandatory, he is the number one ranked featherweight challenger and Barros has until February 5 for an optional and then has to face the mandatory contender, which is usually the fighter ranked in the number one spot.
"Caballero strives to be the mandatory challenger. I imagine that in a few days the WBA will rule on the matter. Regardless of whether or not the mandatory is Caballero, Barros has to face the fighter designated as the WBA mandatory," said Espino to Gustavo Aparicio.
