Joe DeGuardia, promoter for heavyweight contender Carlos Takam, said a deal was nearly complete for a fight with WBC champion Tyson Fury - but the comeback date unexpectedly called off. Fury was scheduled to make a voluntary defense on December 5th in the UK.
Two men have emerged as potential challengers for heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury’s next fight, Agit Kabayel and Carlos Takam, Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, Fury’s co-promoter with Frank Warren, told BoxingScene on Tuesday night.
Carlos Takam and Jerry Forrest did their best to save the show. Their in-ring action, however, proved neither entertaining nor engaging. The heavyweight-headlined July 9 edition of Top Rank Boxing on ESPN averaged 299,000 viewers over the course of the two-hour, forty-seven minute telecast, according to Nielsen Media Research. The four-fight card reached a peak audience of 344,000 viewers, which came at the 10:15pm-10:29pm ET block during the headlining act which saw Cameroon’s Takam (39-5-1, 28KOs) score a 10-round decision over Forrest live on ESPN from the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.

Takam ended Week 5 inside the MGM Grand "Bubble" with a 10-round unanimous decision over Jerry Forrest by scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94. A former world title challenger and 2004 Olympian, Takam notched his fourth consecutive win following back-to-back defeats at the hands of Anthony Joshua and Derek Chisora.

Jerry Forrest recognizes that Carlos Takam has faced a much higher level of opposition than him. The left-handed heavyweight has determined, though, that he has too much boxing ability for the aggressive veteran. Forrest is confident he is plenty equipped to deal with Takam’s pressure and record the biggest victory of his career in their 10-round main event Thursday night in Las Vegas.
Carlos Takam has occupied an even more imposing position than this. The veteran heavyweight from Cameroon took a tougher fight than what awaits him Thursday night on about 10 days’ notice in October 2017. Takam performed well enough in that 10th-round, technical-knockout loss to then-unbeaten champion Anthony Joshua to make him completely comfortable accepting this 10-rounder versus Jerry Forrest with the same small amount of time to prepare.
