Carl Froch: record, next fight and profile →
Oleksandr Usyk remained the undisputed world cruiserweight champion on Saturday with an eighth round stoppage of Tony Bellew at the Manchester Arena. The 2012 Olympic heavyweight gold medallist stunned Bellew with a right to the head before banging in a looping left to send him crashing to the canvas and, ultimately, into retirement.
Gennady Golovkin has plenty of options. If the former middleweight champion copies Canelo Alvarez’s blueprint and moves up to super middleweight for his next fight, Carl Froch would advise against Golovkin challenging WBA 168-pound champion Callum Smith. The emerging Smith demolished George Groves in his last fight, which he won by seventh-round technical knockout in the World Boxing Super Series’ super middleweight final September 28 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Carl Froch figures Tony Bellew’s power will make him dangerous against Oleksandr Usyk right up until the final bell Saturday night. The unbeaten Usyk is heavily favored to beat Bellew in their cruiserweight title fight at Manchester Arena in Manchester, England (Sky Sports Box Office; DAZN). The retired Froch, now a Sky Sports boxing analyst, still gives Bellew a better chance than the lopsided odds indicate of upsetting Usyk.
Carl Froch knows a thing or two about what it takes to entertain a stadium full of fight fans in London. The retired super middleweight champion hopes Anthony Joshua does just that Saturday night. Froch, an analyst for Sky Sports’ boxing coverage, wrote in a column for the network’s website Wednesday that the huge heavyweight champion must get back to entertaining fickle fight fans who want more from him after he went the distance for the first time as a pro in his last fight.
Former super middleweight champion and Sky Sports pundit, Carl Froch, was far from impressed with the recent victory by Amir Khan, who this past Saturday night survived a knockdown to claim a twelve round unanimous decision victory over Samuel Vargas in Birmingham. Khan was put on the canvas at the end of the second round, with a big overhand right, when he appeared to be in complete control.
FORMER world middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik remains content that he has fought for the last time. “I promised my kids at a young age and my wife that I would be done. They wanted me done shortly after I won the title,” said the Youngstown star. “I get the itch here and there but not enough to go back there. When does enough become enough,” he asked.
Three-time super middleweight champion Carl Froch says David Haye is one of the best boxers that Britain has ever produced. Haye, 37, announced his retirement via a video message on social media yesterday (June 13) as well as a lengthy statement on his hayemaker.com website. After 27 years in boxing the former unified cruiserweight and WBA heavyweight champion called time on his career.
On Saturday night, David Haye's career was left in ruins after he again lost to Tony Bellew, this time after a fifth-round stoppage in their rematch at London's O2 Arena. At 37 and having proved increasingly injury prone, Haye's reputation has been left beyond repair after successive defeats by an opponent who was a light-heavyweight, while he reigned as the WBA heavyweight champion at his peak.
If he was staking a wager on the contest, former super middleweight champion Carl Froch would pick Tony Bellew to pull off another upset win over two-division world champion David Haye. Last March, Bellew moved up from the cruiserweight division to secure a major upset victory when he stopped Haye in the eleventh round.
Former super middleweight champion and Sky Sports pundit, Carl Froch, feels confident that IBF, IBO, WBA, WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua (21-0, 20 KOs) will be too much for WBC beltholder champion Deontay Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs).
