ATLANTA – Jamel Herring realizes criticism comes with the glory and the money when you’re a world champion. Herring still couldn’t help but take offense when cynics questioned his heart after an unusual disqualification win over Jonathan Oquendo 13 months ago. The WBO junior lightweight champion couldn’t continue after the eighth round that night because he couldn’t see out of his right eye.
Jamel Herring’s dominant performance against Carl Frampton didn’t exactly capture Shakur Stevenson’s attention. The undefeated Stevenson has seen only highlights of Herring’s sixth-round technical knockout of Frampton. Stevenson nevertheless cannot help but feel Herring has been given more credit than he deserves for stopping someone Stevenson considers an older, smaller fighter.
As impressive as Jamel Herring looked against Carl Frampton, Shakur Stevenson considers his technical-knockout victory more reflective of Frampton than Herring. Herring retained his WBO junior lightweight title by stopping Frampton in the sixth round April 3 at Caesars Bluewaters Dubai. The 35-year-old southpaw dropped Frampton twice, once in the fifth round and again in the sixth round, during that scheduled 12-round, 130-pound championship match before it was stopped.
Tommy McCarthy believes the Frampton factor has played a big role in making him believe he could win a world title. McCarthy, from Belfast, who is ranked in the top ten by WBC, WBA and IBF, defends his European cruiserweight title against Alexandru Jur, of Romania, in Manchester on Saturday and a win could see him boxing for a world title this year.
Former two division world champion Carl Frampton, 34-years-old, is not going to become another fighter who retires from the sport - only to return because he misses the limelight.
WHEN IT CAME to the final reckoning, it was just a fight and a weight too far for Carl Frampton in his bid to make history for his country on Saturday night. Father Time catches up with us all at some point and Carl can look forward to more time being a father now he has confirmed the gloves are well and truly hung up. Retirement did look on the cards at the end of 2018 following his classic confrontation with Josh Warrington in Manchester, but he decided to give it another go at another weight and now the story concludes with a world title defeat to Jamel Herring in Dubai.
Carl Frampton has released a lengthy statement following his decision to retire from professional boxing over the weekend. Frampton (28-3, 16 KOs) had an incredible career, becoming a two-weight world champion after winning world titles at super-bantamweight and featherweight.
A healthy Jamel Herring is a problem for anyone in the junior lightweight division. The message was emphatically delivered by the reigning WBO titlist in his most recent title defense, a 6th round stoppage of former two-division champ Carl Frampton (28-3, 16KOs). Herring overcame Covid and no fewer than four fight postponements in making his way to Dubai and registering his best career win to date.
